Why Are Flowers So Important at a Wedding?

For centuries, flowers have played an important role in many of life’s major events — and your wedding day is no exception. Flowers are the backdrop of your wedding and set the tone for a momentous experience and memories that will last a lifetime.

Wedding flowers represent …

  • Joy
  • Happiness; and
  • Celebration

… by adding color, texture, and a special feeling to your wedding day.

Flowers are an important part of creating the ambiance or mood you want for your big day. The flowers you pick show your style, whether it be elegant, whimsical, or bohemian.

At Botanica Floral + Home, wedding flowers are among our favorite creations. We describe our style as organic, lush, and romantic. But we will work with your design vision to emulate any style you choose.

Is It Cheaper to Have Real or Fake Flowers for a Wedding?

One of the misconceptions people have when planning their floral budget is that faux flowers are less expensive. Sure, you can find cheap, low-quality artificial flowers.

But beautiful faux flowers that look real usually cost more than their fresh counterparts.

That’s because artificial flowers that look like the real thing are made of silk, or other high-quality materials that give them a life-like appearance, which can be more expensive than fresh flowers. Depending on the types of flowers you use, silk flowers may cost from one to five dollars more per stem than real. When you consider …

  • Bouquets
  • Boutonnieres
  • Centerpieces
  • Wreaths
  • Pew decorations
  • And more

… those costs can really add up.

So if you’re trying to save money by deciding between fresh or artificial flowers for your wedding, choosing silk arrangements is not going to help you.

Is It Better to Use Real or Fake Flowers for a Wedding?

The decision to use real or fake flowers for a wedding is a personal one and can depend on a variety of factors.

Let’s explore some reasons you may want to opt for real or fake flowers below.

3 Reasons to Choose Real Flowers for Your Wedding

#1: Real Flowers Add a Special Touch

Of course, we believe that nothing compares to fresh flowers. They add elegance and a level of class that can be hard to achieve with faux.

The fragrance of fresh flowers alone is enough of a reason to choose the real thing for your wedding.

Imagine walking through the doors of the church and being enveloped by the scent of roses and gardenias. Or your guests lingering at their tables while enjoying the fragrance of peonies and freesia.

We know that scent, memory, and emotion are all intertwined. Wouldn’t it be great to be transported back to one of the happiest, most important days of your life simply by catching a whiff of a blossom that was part of your wedding design?

That’s something you just won’t get with artificial flowers.

#2: Florists Do All the Work for You

Some brides may have a vision of saving money by purchasing silk flowers and creating arrangements themselves.

We already debunked the myth that faux flowers are cheaper than fresh, so let’s look at it from another angle.

With the seemingly endless list of things you must do to prepare for your wedding day, do you really want to add floral design as another one of your tasks?

Not only is it time consuming, but what if you don’t have a talent for arranging flowers? Can you imagine spending all that money on silk stems and then having your bouquets and centerpieces look awful when you put them together? How embarrassing.

Your florist will take care of the …

  • Sourcing
  • Design
  • Delivery; and
  • Set-up

… of every element of the floral design for your wedding day. That’s one less thing for a busy bride to have to worry about!

#3: Florists Can Cater to Your Budget

If you don’t have a ton of money to spend on flowers for your wedding, your florist can work with you to provide arrangements that are closer to your price point while still being stunning and memorable.

For instance, roses are a classic choice for weddings. But some varieties are cheaper than others, and your florist has the expertise to guide you.

Other flowers that may be more budget-friendly for your wedding include:

  • Gerbera daisies
  • Hydrangeas
  • Alstroemeria
  • Carnations
  • And more

A great florist will know how to make the most out of whatever flowers you choose.

3 Reasons You Might Consider Faux Flowers for Your Wedding

Can you use fake flowers for a wedding? Absolutely!

Here are a few reasons artificial flowers might be the right choice for you on your big day.

#1: You Want Overhanging or Distant Arrangements

Are you planning a grand display of floral arrangements for your wedding or reception? If you choose designs that are quite large and hanging from the ceiling or covering every surface, you’ll probably want to decide on artificial flowers for those.

There are several reasons fresh flowers won’t work for these types of arrangements:

  1. Overhanging arrangements would be too heavy if made with real flowers. Silk is lighter and makes the execution of these designs easier.
  2. High-hanging flowers won’t have a water source, so fresh blooms wouldn’t last very long in that situation.
  3. Those types of grand designs have to be created ahead of time, so faux flowers are the only option that would last.

You may be able to use cheaper fake flowers for any other arrangements that won’t be seen close-up, such as on a balcony or hanging at the tops of windows. But you wouldn’t want to do that for things like bouquets or centerpieces.

#2: The Flower You Want Isn’t in Season

Perhaps you have your heart set on a bouquet that includes Lily of the Valley, but you’re getting married in October. Since that particular bloom is only in season for a short time in the spring, you aren’t going to be able to find it fresh.

Having your florist create a bouquet that comprises mostly fresh flowers with some high-quality silk versions of Lily of the Valley mixed in can be a stunning compromise.

#3: Someone in Your Wedding Party Has Allergies

Some brides steer away from fake flowers because they or someone in the wedding party is highly allergic to certain types of vegetation. After all, no one wants their ceremony interrupted by loud sneezing and blowing of runny noses.

However, if this is your concern, you should know that certain flowers are hypoallergenic and less likely to cause a reaction. These include:

  • Calla lilies
  • Orchids; and
  • Tulips
